What is design for?

Ask a carpenter what carpentry is for and they will give you a very clear answer very quickly.

Ask a banker what banking is for and they will tell you what banking is for.

Ask a property developer what property development is for and will tell you what it's all about.

Why is it then that when we ask designers what design is for we get a thousands answers, all of them different from the others.
